We Have a Coach!

I can't repeat this enough, we have a coach! I for one am excited about this new coach. Mr. Mike Smith, defensive coordinator to the Jacksonville Jaguars is the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Take the jump to read some snippets from the announcement and some more of my thoughts.

Mike is going to help us have our first back-to-back winning seasons, it may not happen next season, but it will happen within four seasons. . .and now a quote.

"Mike possesses all of the key qualities we were looking for in a head coach," said general manager Thomas Dimitroff, in his first month on the job.

-This is the college scouter for the New England Patriots, the "undefeated" New England Patriots. Doubt him at your own risk.

Dimitroff said the 48-year-old Smith, a nine-year NFL coaching veteran, "has strong experience with winning teams, a track record of success, a solid, smart approach to the game, and high character and integrity."

-Now he has the worst offense in the history of football. Good thing he's a defense guy!

Smith will be Atlanta's sixth coach since December 2003. Before Petrino quit, Dan Reeves and Jim Mora were fired. Wade Phillips and Thomas worked three games each as interim replacements.

-Sixth times a charm.

The team did not wait on an interview with New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. The Falcons were denied permission to interview Spagnuolo while the Giants, preparing for the Super Bowl, are in the postseason.

-I only hope that this doesn't come back to bite us in the butt. Seriously, have you seen the Giants defense? It is horrifying! I bet this is going to be one of the first times this season that Tom Brady really gets pressured. I like Mike, but the Giants D is potent.

All in all, I am very excited about having a new head coach and heading into the super bowl we can think about draft day fairies dancing around top picks.

PS. Have you noticed the guys we've hired and looked at, Spagnulo, Demitroff, and Petrino? I'm glad I get an easy name to shout at when the passing game stinks.
